A tiny magical oasis of tropical enchantment, Poppies Samui lies on a pristine white sandy beach in the Gulf of Siam. Located at the south end of renowned Chaweng Beach, well away from the hustle and bustle of the main resort area, Poppies has earned its reputation, since opening in 1994, as Koh Samui's most exclusive boutique hideaway. In addition to offering the same idyllic style and charm as its famous namesake and sister hotel Poppies Bali. Poppies Samui offers its guests exceptionally high standards of friendly service and attention to detail in a perfect location.

Poppies is owned, managed and staffed by a dedicated and established team, many of whom have been employed since its opening. The resort's staff to room ratio is over 3 to 1. As a result Poppies is quite simply a haven of comfort, excellent food, and personal service, particularly for couples (although children are welcome) at affordable prices, where as many as 35% of our guests are returnees.

1985 to the present day...

The Resort owes its existence to a chance meeting in 1985 between an Englishman and an Irishman. It sounds like the beginning of a joke, but in this case the punch line is the beautiful resort we now know asPoppies Samui.

David, the Irishman, and his Thai wife owned the prime beach-front land, which in 1989 was still a plain, featureless rectangle sloping in part away from the beach. John, the Englishman, who together with his Balinese wife had created Poppies Bali, beginning in 1973, took on the challenge of working out the design concept for a luxurious hideaway on a very limited piece of land, the shortcomings of which were overcome with an elaborate plan to build 10 extra cottages and a garden above the lobby at the rear of the property.A further challenge was to offer a sense of individual privacy in a lush tropical garden ambience. The landscaping was painstakingly planned and executed with this in mind.

The new partners set up a company to build and operate Poppies Samui, and after a lengthy design and construction period the hotel finally opened its doors in 1994.The layout of the cottages and gardens and the design of the rock swimming pool are based to a great extent on those of Poppies Bali, though the actual building style is Thai. Much emphasis was placed on obtaining traditional Thai building materials such as teak and other hardwoods, unglazed roof tiles, hand made ceramics, and local fabrics.

The bathrooms have open-air gardens, as in Bali. The solid wood Restaurant Pavilion, with carved teak gables, was built in Ayuthaya, the old capital of Siam, and re-assembled in Samui.

To help maintain the overall tranquillity of the property a tunnel was constructed under the cottages which connects the loading bay in the forecourt to the kitchen. The tunnel is used as a walkway for staff and to deliver food and drink to kitchen and bar.

Chaweng Beach

This is the largest beach on Koh Samui. It has a long stretch of pure white sand. The water is clear, warm and mostly calm.

Due to the island’s regulation governing the height of buildings, you will not find towering blocks along the beach front, but you will find a mixture of luxury hotels, restaurants, nightlife and even the odd pub.

Water sports of every description abound - water skiing, jet skiing, sailing, wind surfing and paragliding. Some of the finest scuba and snorkeling dive sites can be found on nearby neighbouring islands (15 minutes to one hour away by high speed boat). Fully accredited PADI dive schools are plentiful and they will collect and deliver you back to Poppies.

Nightlife of every conceivable type, ranging from the sublime to the totally ridiculous, is readily available. It's all there if you want it, but it's also very easy to avoid! The restaurant scene is vibrant with just about every known cuisine available ranging from truly world class to the very simple. Be selective and research carefully - or simply stay at Poppies !

Poppies Staff will be delighted to arrange diving courses, golf, excursions, car hire (we are agents for the leading car rental companies) whilst you are here.

If you prefer not to drive, you can take a Poppies limo for a half day tour of the island driven by one of our senior English speaking members of staff.

Just 24 luxuriously appointed individual Thai style cottages hide amid the tropical greenery, each offering privacy from the others, and each combining the best of Thai style with modern western comforts. Screened windows and inner doors, leading onto a private terrace, let in the sea breezes, while both air-conditioning and ceiling fan come as standard.

The unique bathroom, with its own private screened garden open to the sky, features a sunken bathtub and shower set in a cool marble floor.

The path to each cottage leads through lush landscaped gardens passing meandering streams, fish ponds, teak bridges and waterfalls.

Between these gardens and the sea lies a spectacular crystal-clear free form swimming pool with natural rock surrounds, complemented by a sparkling rock pool jacuzzi.
